Sign of the Times: Major Changes Made to Zodiac

What’s your sign? If you thought you were a Virgo, it turns out you’re actually a Leo — and now there’s even a 13th sign, Ophiuchus.

So what happened? Today, MSNBC stirred up a buzz by discussing the new zodiac, which seems to have begun with an article in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune last weekend. In the article, astronomer Parke Kunkle stated that the Earth’s relation to the sun had changed since the creation of the zodiac by the Babylonians — meaning that the stars were in a completely different position from where they are today.

Kunkle, who doesn’t believe in astrology, probably didn’t realize what an impact his words would make on astrology; the zodiac has been reorganized, and a new sign has been added.

The new sign, Ophiuchus, falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius and is represented by a man wrestling a serpant.

Readers, what do you think of the switch? Does your new sign change the way you look at yourself or your relationships?

College Students Choose Ego Boost Over Sex, Food

While many people may think that college students enjoy nothing more than sex, junk food, alcohol, and money, a new paper reports that this is not the case.

Turns out, college kids surveyed would rather receive an ego boost, such as a compliment or a good grade on an essay, than eat their favorite food, drink alcohol, or have sex.

The New York Times reported the findings, describing how the new paper posits that young people have a need to feel good about themselves that is even stronger than their desire for material possessions, food, or sex.

Another explanation may be that sex and alcohol are easy to come by on college campuses, whereas positive feedback is harder to obtain.

The paper was published recently in The Journal of Personality and focused on results from two different studies, both of which were based on surveys of University of Michigan students.

Readers, are you surprised by these findings? Would you rather receive a compliment than a paycheck?

Charlize Theron to Play the Evil Queen

Charlize Theron has recently signed on to appear as the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman.

The film will be in keeping with recent trends for "darker," "grittier" retellings of classic stories, including Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, and the soon to be released Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried. Snow White will focus more on the huntsman who was supposed to kill Snow White. Instead, he trains her to return to the castle and kill the Evil Queen.

The role of Snow White has not been casted yet, though producers want to go with a fresh face. On the short list is Riley Keough, Elvis Presley's granddaughter.

Snow White and the Huntsman is in pre-production and is set to be released in 2012.

This $5,000 Burger Does Not Make the Value Menu

A few days ago, we brought you the $10,000 clutch from McQueen. If that was too much of a splurge to consider, ponder this: how much would you pay for, say, a burger?

At McDonald's you can buy a burger for $1. At Fleur, the chefs believe their burgers are worth $5,000.

Yes, a $5,000 burger.

Fleur in Las Vegas is the brainchild of Hubert Keller. His Kobe beef burger is topped with foie gras and truffles, and the special sauce contains even more truffles.

If the idea of eating a burger that costs as much as 10 pairs of Louboutins is hard to swallow, don't worry. You'll be washing the meal down with a bottle of Petrus.

And don't fret - according to Zagat Buzz, the crystal stemware you used will be shipped to your house as a "constant reminder you blew five grand on a burger."

Readers, would you ever consider spending that much money on a burger?

Shakira Ends Relationship with Her BF of Eleven Years

Latin pop star Shakira announced on Monday that she and investment banker Antonio de la Rue ended their relationship last summer after being together for the past eleven years.

"Since August 2010, we made a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship," she wrote on her blog. "Throughout this time we have continued to work together hand in hand, have remained close and have kept the details absolutely private until now."

However, the singer wrote that she views “the period of separation” as “temporary and a time of individual growth,” so there’s still a chance that the couple will get back together.

Wicked to Become a Mini-Series

Wicked is in development to become an 8-hour mini-series on ABC, and produced by Salma Hayek, reports the New York Times.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the 1995 bestseller by Gregory Maguire, retells the classic Wizard of Oz story, casting Elphaba, the "wicked" witch, in the lead. The novel reveals her to be a liberal-minded, Animal-rights activist. The book is best known for being the source material for the musical Wicked. The mini-series will be based on the book, though, not the musical (sorry to disappoint, but this means no singing).

Paul Lee, president of ABC Entertainment had this to say about the possible series: "It's sort of a fabulous idea. It's epic. It's romantic, very much within [ABC's] brand."

While the idea of Wicked will be exciting to a large portion of viewers already familiar with the story, the mini-series format is a huge step for TV programming. Mr. Lee has experience in British television, and is eager to try the shorter series lengths that are common overseas. However, he doesn't hold out hope for Wicked to jump-start the form, saying, "We haven't picked it up. We haven't seen a script."

Would you be excited to see Wicked on TV? Who would be the perfect Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, especially since they will not be required to sing?

New Study Shows That Women's Tears Turn Men Off

Have you ever noticed how men can get super uncomfortable around crying women? Well, a new scientific study might explain why this is the case. Apparently, female tears emit chemical signals that actually turn men off.

ABC News recently reported the results of the study, which showed that male participants who smelled women’s tears had lower testosterone levels than men who smelled salt water.

While you might not be surprised at this “revelation,” the explanation behind it is pretty fascinating. First of all, tears that are shed because of emotion are chemically different from the tears shed because of an onion, or a poke in the eye. This is probably because emotional tears contain a sort of chemical distress signal, which would explain the lowered testosterone (which leads to lowered aggression).

So if you’re ever considering crying to calm your man down, just realize that you’ll also be turning him off — biologically.

Readers, what do you think of the results of this study?
