Facebook Was Most Visited Site in 2010, Beats Google

Hitwise reported that Facebook beat out Google as the most visited site in 2010. This triumph marks a significant triumph for the social networking site as, per the New York Daily News, only two years ago Facebook ranked ninth behind MySpace and eBay.

PRNewser reports that between January and November of this past year, 8.19 percent of US visits were to Facebook. This compares to the 7.19 percent of visits that were to Google.

New Year's Eve: What Will You Wear?

The new year is upon us, so it's time to figure out what you'll be wearing to those New Year's Eve parties! Of course, sparkle is de rigeur, but there are so many choices: satin, sequins, glitter, and rhinestones. The perfect element of shine really depends on your personality.

Satin: The Sophisticate

You're always put together perfectly, and you embody class. However, you love to have a good time. Show a hint of your fun side with a shiny satin or taffeta dress in a jewel tone such as plum or citrine and pair it with the Christian Louboutin "Canonita" ankle bootie in satin and chiffon ($995 at us.christianlouboutin.com).

Sequins: The Party Girl

Always the life of the party, you love to make an entrance and keep everyone's spirits high. Maintain your presence in a sequined party dress the color of champagne (the drink of choice for New Year's Eve!), such as this one by Aidan Mattox ($295 at Neiman Marcus). Balance the intensity of the dress with some black patent leather peep-toe platforms and a simple black clutch.
Glitter: The Flirt
You know how to catch the eye without causing too much of a stir. You always show just enough to spark interest while leaving them wanting more. Give a flash of your playfulness with the Christian Louboutin "Lady Peep" slingback in gold glitter ($895 at us.christianlouboutin.com). Combine with a strapless black cocktail dress and you're sure to get a (tasteful) kiss at midnight!
Rhinestones: The Glamazon

You have but one simple request: all eyes on you! The word "understated" just isn't in your vocabulary, and any suggestions for you to tone down your look are simply futile. Play up your no-holds-barred style with some equally fearless accessories. Start with a body-conscious dress in a bold, solid color (perhaps a dark pink, to celebrate the official color of 2011, Honeysuckle) and layer on the bling! Try a statement necklace like this gold and crystal style from RichRocks ($95 at www.richrocksnyc.com). Add a strappy gold platform sandal and gold leather clutch and every head will turn as you make your rounds.

So readers, what do you have picked out for your New Year's Eve soirees?

Reese Witherspoon is Engaged

Reese Witherspoon announced yesterday through her publicist that she is engaged to marry her boyfriend, Jim Toth — and she’s got some pretty amazing bling to prove it.

The couple began dating early this year, shortly after Witherspoon’s breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Toth, a Hollywood agent, worked with jeweler William Goldberg to design his new fiance’s custom engagement ring. It features a retro-looking 4 carat Ashoka diamond set on a pave diamond and platinum band (similar to the one in the photo above).

Ashoka stones are incredibly rare, and less than ten percent of these rare diamonds can be cut like Reese’s ring — her rock has 62 displayed facets!

Paris to Get a Little Shinier

Paris is the city of lights, love, and Chanel. And now, the Musée d'Orsay, one of Paris' landmark museums, will be home to a giant Chanel No. 5 bottle made of 1,200 hand-assembled sequins.

The ad, which will run from January 6-28, will cover 2,890 square feet on the side of the museum and be visible from the Seine.

Do you think the ad is appropriate for the label?

Public Relations: A Brief History

In an article titled "Rise Of The Image Men," business magazine The Economist gives a brief analysis of the public relations industry. Starting with the father of public relations, Ivy Lee, the article chronicles the difficulties faced by the PR industry, such as deciding whether or not a cause should be promoted (the article mentions the Norwegian government's push to bring back whaling) and just how strongly one should persuade (one story involves Ivy Lee making accusations that a union organizer named Mother Jones was a prostitute and brothel-owner).

The article also brings up the more current issue of social media. According to the article, many PR consultants are becoming hopeful that they will create a successful campaign based solely on social media, while "all that is happening is that social-media elements are being added to traditional marketing plans." Ultimately, however, the article presents a hopeful outlook for the future of social media in public relations, stating that "another century of spin, perhaps greater than the one gone by, is in prospect."

Kardashian Covers Sell Big in 2010

If the Kardashian sisters seemed to be everywhere in 2010, it's probably because they were. This year, both weekly and monthly magazine titles have gotten a boost with a Kardashian cover.

Celebrity weeklies, like Us Weekly, Life & Style, and OK!, have covered the sisters fairly consistently all year, which isn't surprising considering their exposure. In addition to "Keeping up With the Kardashians" and after the success of "Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami," "Kourtney and Kim Take New York" will premiere in January. The girls' love lives have also been media fodder, with OK! magazine reportedly paying $300,000 for the rights to Khloé's wedding to Lamar Odom in September 2009.

The surprising figure is the girls' success with monthly titles. According to Rapid Report (through November), Shape Magazine had it's best-selling issue of the year in June, with Kim Kardashian on the cover. W Magazine also saw big numbers, when it featured Kim naked on the cover for its second highest-seller of the year.

The success of these covers can only mean that we'll being seeing a lot more of the Kardashians in 2011.

What about you? Do you pick up magazines with a Kardashian on the front?

Michelle Branch to Return to Pop Music

Michelle Branch, best known for early-naughts hits like "Everywhere" and "All You Wanted," is planning her return to pop music.

The singer has been in London writing a "fun" and "creative" album with producers Jim Irvin and Julian Emrey, according to Perez Hilton. In a Ustream chat, Branch said, "I have 11 or 12 songs ready to go right now and I'm going to go in studio in January and start recording them. I'm really confident I will have this record out by next summer."

Branch took a break from pop music after 2003's Hotel Paper, which made it to number two in the U.S. She then released 2006's Stand Still, Look Pretty as part of country duo The Wreckers, which featured the hit "Leave the Pieces."

Her newest solo project probably won't include her new country sound, though. Branch said, "This record is more in the vein of my first record, which I would say was a pop record."

Will you be buying Michelle Branch's new album?

Natalie Portman Engaged and Expecting

Not only has “Black Swan” earned Natalie Portman a lot of Oscar buzz, but movie has also given the actress a fiancé — and a baby on the way.

Portman’s reps confirmed to People that she is engaged to her boyfriend, Benjamin Millepied, who she met on the set of the film and whose child she is expecting.

Millepied was a choreographer, and he also played the role of the Prince. He was dating one of the ballet dancers when he first met Portman, but the two fell in love after spending so much time together on set (she trained for five hours a day for an entire year).

Hurricane Anna

Actress Anna Nicole Smith was often described as being a "force of nature." However, documents recently released on WikiLeaks, and published in The Guardian may prove it true.

"Not since Category 4 Hurricane Betsy made landfall in 1965 has one woman done as much damage in Nassau," reads a cable from Deputy Chief of Mission D. Brent Hardt.

The trouble began when Smith filed for legal residency in the Bahamas in 2006. The process, which can take years, only took a month. The application was approved by Minister of Immigration Shane Gibson, who was later found to have accepted a $10,000 check and a $25,000 watch from Smith. In February 2007 (the same month that Smith passed away), Gibson resigned after photos of the two kissing in Smith's bed were released.

After the botched treatment and death of Anna Nicole's son, a few lesser officials were either fired or resigned when it was speculated that the Coroner's Court had covered up the cause of death to protect Anna Nicole from embarrassment.

The leaked cable continues, "Lying in disarray in her wake are Doctor's Hospital, the coroner's Court, the Department of Immigration, local mega-lawyers Callenders and Co., formerly popular Minister of Immigration Shane Gibson and possibly Prime Minister Christie's PLP government."

The last of these confidential cables was dated March 2007, two months before the Progressive Labor Party lost an election despite "a strong local economy," according to the Huffington Post. The cable noted that the opposing Free National Movement "[had] used these scandals to seize the offensive in the run-up to elections."

In the wake of Smith's death, though, the memos conceded that Hurricane Anna did have a positive effect, leading to a "revitalized media" and a more democratic society.
